A radical change of life with new experiences
DEBORAH : « born in Kent in the south of England, my first profession was a Solicitor - I worked in London for 15 years. »
PETER : « born in the North, in Manchester, I spent 10 months in the Languedoc after graduating, I later worked in London as Director of Finance for an advertising company. »
In 1997, through some friends in common, that we met in a jazz club.
We lived in London together for a number of years before deciding, in 2002, to escape in order to follow our dream to own a small vineyard in the South of France.
Before settling in France, we spent 18 months in New Zealand where we both obtained a diploma in wine-making and viticulture from Tairawhiti Polytechnic in Gisborne, North Island.
That was followed by an exhausting three months for Peter who spent the 2004 vintage with Sacred Hill winery - on the night shift.
The creation of Mas Gabriel
The same year we came back to Europe and spent the 2004 vintage working in Bordeaux. But as we always wanted to live in the Languedoc, we moved here at the end of 2004.
After 18 months of searching, we arrived at Caux where we were immediately seduced by a few hectares of vineyards and the magnificent “terroir”. We then found a winemaker’s house and so, with our first harvest in 2006, Mas Gabriel was born.
Today, each one has their own area of work. Peter takes charge of the wine-making, the tractor driving, and of course the budget! We prune together and Deborah does a lot of de-budding and organises the pickers. She also takes charge of the marketing and and sales of the whole production to professional and private clients.
