ELENA FUCCI
A WINEMAKER, A VOLCANO AND AN ICONIC CRU
My farm was founded in 2000, in Barile, when the family was discussing whether to sell the beautiful vineyards that surround our house.
The vineyards were acquired in the 1960s by my grandfather Generoso, purchasing the highest part of the farms located in Contrada Solagna del Titolo at the foot of Monte Vulture. Over the years my grandfather and my great-grandfather took care of the vineyards, limiting themselves to selling the grapes and producing for their own consumption. Since then, as the family used to say, "Six hectares are not held as a joke", we were now determined to sell because my parents are both teachers and both my sisters and I saw our future away from Barile, above all because we had many projects from new horizons favored by university studies.
Interested buyers who knocked on our door were not lacking, but it was the very last visit when it touched my heart: I couldn't bear that someone would take the vineyards away from us and that someone else could do something great with some of the oldest vineyards of the Vulture (most are between 55 and 60 years, some even 70 years). So I decided to change the plans of my whole life and that of my family; we decided to invest in the territory and in the resources that had allowed my father, and my grandparents and great-grandparents before him, to live and grow in the Vulture.
It might seem like one of those stories written by novelists, but when I confided to my parents about this idea and the intention of studying oenology at university they were immediately delighted and extremely available. In particular, my father, who seemed to be harboring this dream for some time, I found that he had already informed himself about the eligible Italian agricultural faculties in which I could enroll, and about everything that was needed to start this business. The winery came to life with the 2000 harvest, in parallel with my university studies at the faculty of viticulture and oenology. Initially supported by external professionals, since 2004 I have lead the winery personally.
The choice right from the start, without any regrets, was to bet everything on a single label,"Titolo", immediately imagining it as a cru. A single wine, in short, for objective reasons linked to the yields of the vineyards and for the quality given by the maturity of the plants. A single wine to best represent the specificity of Aglianico and the territoriality of Vulture. My interpretation of the territory is defined by those in the sector: “modern but not modernist”. Modern, for having been able to understand the real needs of the vine in terms of maturity and refinement, and "non-modernist" because I always work without distorting the characteristics of the fruit that the vineyard gives.
ESTATE PROFILE
Soil origin: Volcanic
Grapes: 100% Aglianico del Vulture
Total area of the company: 7.00 Ha
Current vineyard area: 6.00 Ha
Training system: Short Guyot, "capanno" (typical training system in the Vulture)
Harvest: End of October, carried out entirely by hand with the use of small boxes
Production: Destemming and soft pressing.
Traditional fermentation with a temperature not exceeding 18-20°C.
Maturation in new barriques for at least 12 months.
Bottling towards the end of the year following the harvest.
Aging in the bottle for 12 months before being launched on the market.
THE CELLAR
The current cellar was built from the old premises under the Titolo Tower, where my grandfather Generoso sheltered agricultural vehicles and equipment. I had a first extension carried out by digging directly into the volcanic rock to house the barrel cellar.
My cellar is equipped with all the necessary equipment from those for the harvest, to those for bottling and labelling, taking advantage of every available space in order to ensure the best possible attention to my wine. The new cellar was recently completed, built adjacent to the historic company building and connected by a tunnel dug into the volcanic rock.
I chose to build the new structure according to the principles of bio-architecture using recycled materials and technologies to reduce energy consumption and environmental impacts to zero.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
On these hills that seem to never end, in an important vineyard region, Aglianico del Vulture, together with my husband Andrea, and with the help of my father Salvatore, we work with passion to make the unmistakable and unique characteristics of our wine. These are not limited to perfume and color, clarity and flavor, but reside in the personality of Titolo, in its balance and in the ability to transmit its originality to those who drink it.
We started out conscious of being able to do an excellent job, but without great pretensions considering Italy's great wine heritage. Since then, we have managed to carve out our visibility and a satisfaction that goes beyond the awards obtained by national and international guides but comes also in the demonstration that past and future, traveling together, can make a small company like ours a great company - known and appreciated all over the world and, through the image of our territory, that we can help make our Basilicata region known to everyone.
The work we do in the vineyard is not basic viticulture but really precise gardening work, such is the care that is dedicated to our vines: Respect for nature and its cycles; no use of chemicals, even the cords we use to tie the vines come from the ginestra that we leave to dry during the summer. Work in the vineyard is essential. We only vinify our own grapes and when they arrive in the cellar to start the vinification, I am almost terrified of ruining them! Fortunately, the final result rewards all the efforts made in the vineyard and in the cellar without leaving us unhappy.
THE TEAM
MY GRANDFATHER : GENEROSO
He has the art of viticulture in his blood, and, despite his 94 springs, he personally and daily follows the vineyards. Every year, at every harvest, it's a rush - you don't have time to bring the grapes to the cellar before grandfather is ready to prune the plants.
ME : ELENA FUCCI
I am the owner, as well as an oenologist, agronomist and face of the company. I completed my studies in Viticulture and Oenology at the Agricultural University of Pisa and I have been personally in charge of the company and the vinification of my product since 2004.
MY FATHER : SALVATORE FUCCI
He is the true image of the company. He took charge of my dreams, committing everything he had to indulge them (and most likely he too dreamed of this story as well). Although he does not speak English, he welcomes customers to the company, making himself understood and making every moment of the visit fun.
MY HUSBAND : ANDREA MANZANI
He has organization in his blood, and as a good Florentine also the art of commerce. Its contribution has been decisive in broadening our commercial horizons and beyond: it is not unusual to see it on a tractor in the vineyard or with a brush cutter as a relaxing activity.
MY YOUNGEST SISTER : SOPHIA FUCCI
Sophia is a young but fundamental presence in my company. Thanks to her easy-going character and her skills in social communication, she is involved in the distribution of my Aglianico del Vulture and in public relations.
TASTING NOTES
One of the greatest compliments that Titolo has recieved is its ability to be recognised among other wines. This is precisely based on the representativeness of the territory from which it is born.
Those who come to visit the winery and the company, come to visit vineyards in an inland and mountainous area located at 600 meters above sea level and, therefore, a volcanic terrain. In fact, walking among the rows, Monte Vulture is always clearly visible a few hundred meters away, a strongly mineral soil, with a dark and pozzolanic color, on which you can clearly read the history and life of the volcano. The taste and scent of my wine are dictated precisely by the peculiarity of our soil, made up of layers of lava flows, lapilli or ashes, interspersed with phases of stasis in clay.
The color, of an intense ruby, has marked garnet reflections. The bouquet, broad and complex, is decidedly fruity and ethereal, with clear spicy hints. It has strong sensations of cherry and fruit jam, currant and rosemary, tobacco and cinnamon, with light hints of vanilla. The flavor is dry, warm, with a broad structure and a long aromatic persistence. It is a wine with a strong personality, which represents me well - still very young, but destined for a great future.
