PARTICIPATE IN THE HOSPICES DE BEAUNE WINE SALE
The goal is to assemble fifty WineFunders to acquire a "pièce" (or barrel) of high quality wine at this fantastic and legendary wine auction.
Funds raised at this auction are destined to the charitable cause of financing operations at the Hospices de Beaune medical center, namely: improving care equipment (purchase of a scanner, an MRI...), infrastructure modernization, preservation of historical monuments.
A magical setting: Beaune and the Hotel Dieu
The Hotel-Dieu is the major monument of Beaune. It is emblematic of the city and the region for its courtyard, its multicolored tiled roof and its history.
Built in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy Philip Le Bon and his wife Guigone Salins, it has welcomed patients from the town since its construction.
Thanks to many donations from patrons in the region, the building now houses several thousand precious objects and works of art.
Classed as a historic monument in the 1860s, this building ceased to welcome patients in 1980, but visitors of all nationalities still come to discover the treasures of this building as a museum.
The auction was long held in its famous courtyard, now too small to accommodate all the visitors who now gather under the Halle de Beaune.
A historic moment: the auction
Since their creation in the fifteenth century, the Hospices de Beaune sell their own wine to finance their operations. Different sales methods succeeded and it is in 1859 that the auction really took off.
This exceptional event occurs every third Sunday of November and brings together worldwide buyers. Anyone can bid on a barrel of choice but élevage must then be undertaken by a local merchant for a period of 12 to 24 months.
Since the end of World War II, the Hospices supports a charity each year, represented by a celebrity, by donating the profits from the sale of a barrel of Grand Cru, called "pièce des Presidents' (or "Presidents' barrel").
This was sold at a record price of € 480,000 in 2015. In general, the amount of funds raised during the auction is significant and peaked last year, in 2018, with a total of 14 million euros collected!
Assured wine quality: the Hospices de Beaune vineyards
Since its creation, the Hospices de Beaune have their own vineyard, which has steadily grown over the centuries thanks to many generous donors.
The vineyard now measures 60 hectares planted mainly in red wine, on appellations located mainly in Côte de Beaune. Grands Crus and Premiers Crus make up 90% of the vineyard.
The operation is led by a manager, Ludivine Griveau, and entrusted to the Hospices own winegrowers who grow an average of 2.5 hectares of vineyards each and following a very specific set of requirements close to organic farming.
Ludivine Griveau is the first female manager in the history of the Hospices de Beaune, succeeding Roland Masse in 2015, who had governed the vineyards for over 15 years.
No herbicides are used, the pruning is short, harvesting is done by hand, and regular analysis of the soil helps protect the local microbiological environment. The average age of the vines is 34 years and yields are limited to 30 hectoliters per hectare.
The manager and her team then ensure the vinification of each plot respecting the identity of each terroir in order to best express its characteristics
Our goal: bidding on a barrel of Premier Cru
The name "Bellene" is from the Latin "Belenus" which designated an ancient and widely venerated deity. This name is very probably the origin of the name "Beaune" and Maison Roche de Bellene itself being based in Beaune, it seemed natural to turn to the wines of the appellation.
Many wines of Beaune 1er cru are auctioned, and so we hope to acquire a beautiful barrel at a reasonable price.
Each barrel is the result of a blend of different microclimates and it is in these harmonious combinations that we find the originality of the wines of the Domaine des Hospices de Beaune.
The appellation Beaune 1er Cru includes 10 cuvées that Nicolas Potel will taste before making his choice.
