THE PROJECT
A growing awareness of the importance of the equilibrium of the plant (vines) and its substrate (soil and subsoil) is necessary for the future of our wine production. We want to better understand, respect and promote this balance between the vine and its soil in order to restore a more healthy production closer to nature.
The goal is to reconnect with more intuitive farming methods, common sense and good advice (our ancestors who compiled knowledge for several hundred years and more recently scientists in biodynamics) to retrieve not “natural” wines (… yet another story) but pure, essential wines which are a true reflection of their terroir.
After several years of reflection and testing, especially with new organic products, , in academic spheres as well as on a more personal and intuitive level, biodynamic farming became the obvious choice. Meeting Anne Calderoni was decisive: an academically trained oenologist who was able to distantiate herself from her cultural baggage and convinced by biodynamics.
So I decided to take the plunge this year and register for the Ecocert label for organic farming certification and Demeter for biodynamic agriculture certification. It is mandatory to be certified organic in order to obtain Demeter certification.
We started out to implement these changes with a very down to earth approach, by means of observation, closely monitoring vine growth and quality.
This shift does not happen without risk or additional costs and new investments. The investment can be broken down as follows:
- A long term contract with oenologist Anne Calderoni
- The additional costs associated with a more specific and intense labour in the vineyard
- Investment in equipment to care for the vineyard as well as wine cellar equipment
The estimated cost of conversion to biodynamics comes to about 50,000 - € 70,000 €.
Changing to biodynamics will cause a change in distribution. I foresee more customers composed mainly of wine merchants and individuals in France, and small specialized importers (organic and biodynamic) for export.
This will also hopefully result in a better turn-around since this clientele is more concerned with the origin and quality of wines than their purchase price. At least this is what we observe according to current market tendencies and testimonies from winemaker friends.
I need to finance the conversion to this new form of agriculture. Banks certainly offer finance but in their own way, often without understanding our business and our goals.
I like to communicate and share my passion for winemaking with others, with those passionate about wine.
I believe in networks, word of mouth in the sharing of resources and WineFunding integrates well with all of these aspirations. This new form of fundraising appeals to me by its novelty, diversity and freedom it leaves to each and every one.
