CHÂTEAU ST-FERDINAND
NOÉMIE, A WINEMAKER COMMITTED TO BIODIVERSITY
Noémie's challenge: reinventing Château Saint-Ferdinand
Chateau St-Ferdinand was created in the 1970s. The vineyard, on the other hand, has been in existence for over 150 years. In 2012, Noémie Tanneau resigned from her job as a social worker to resume her studies as an agricultural engineer, graduating in 2016. After 8 years' experience in vineyards in Pessac-Léognan and Saint-Emilion, she took the crazy gamble of buying this Château to make atypical, committed wines.
Vineyards: the essence of terroir
The 6-hectare vineyard (90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) has been organically farmed since 2021. 4 hectares of meadows and forests add to this jewel of biodiversity, a refuge for the French League for the Protection of Birds. The château also welcomes campers on sunny days, who enjoy the peaceful setting of the vineyards.
Noémie's wines
Noémie has created 8 artisanal cuvées: reds, rosés and a sparkling rosé. A real surprise and a breath of fresh air in the Bordeaux landscape. In 2023, she was awarded the Trophée de la vigneronne engagée de l'année and her wine was selected and tasted by His Majesty King Charles III. Today, she is planning to launch a white wine cuvée.
NOÉMIE'S PROJECT
Agroforestry plantation of 12 white grape varieties
The project's philosophy :
Château St-Ferdinand specialises in making wines from a living vineyard, where observation, preservation and experimentation are paramount. To meet the challenges of the future and offer a delicate and atypical white wine, Noémie, the winemaker, has chosen to plant 12 different white grape varieties in order to turn them into an observatory of climate adaptation: *Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle, Chenin, Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, Chardonnay, Vermentino, Viognier, Carignan Blanc, Souvignier Gris and Floréal.
Rapsodie’ is more than a wine, it's a sensory experience, where each grape variety plays its note with precision to create a perfect harmony. A true masterpiece that will appeal to the most demanding wine lovers. Find out more about the cuvée by clicking here.
The label is preliminary: WineFunders who have contributed to the project will be asked to vote for the label :-)
Main stages of the project :
1. Designing and planting
A study of the grape varieties, tastings of white grape varieties, a soil analysis and a selection of fruit tree species were carried out in order to adapt the planting as closely as possible.
The 25-acre plot will comprise 12 rows of 65 vines each, and will be planted in spring 2025.
It will be bordered and crossed by a fruit hedge (cherry, apple and pear) and small fruit trees (blackcurrant and redcurrant).
2. Harvesting and ageing
Like the rest of the estate, the plot will be farmed organically, and will be equipped with a mobile poultry house to allow the soil to be worked. The first grapes will be harvested in 2027, and the vinification will take place in several glass globes in order to observe the typicity of each grape variety.
3. Commercialization
The first bottles of Rapsodie will be sold to WineFunders who have backed this project. They will be sold at a price of 30 euros (all taxes included). An educational trail, in partnership with ‘La Bulle Verte’ will run through this experimental plot.
PROJECT COST
With €10,000 we will finance the design and planting of the vineyard (€5,000) and the planting of fruit and shrub hedges (€5,000).
With 20,000€, we'll also be able to finance the equipment needed to vinify the white wines from the first harvest of our new plot.
With €30,000, we will also be able to finance a mobile hen house (€5,000), the responsible wine tourism trail with the green bubble (€4,000) and store fittings and communication about this new vintage of white wine (€1,000)..
Beyond that, we'll be able to set up unusual accommodation in the heart of the vineyard: 2 to 3 “glamping” tents (glamorous camping) for peaceful nights, a warm welcome, with tastings of château wines and products from our vineyard as part of our “Bienvenue à la ferme” label.
